Bathroom Tile / Shower Tile | New Metro Tile
Tile for the Bath, Shower, En Suite, Powder Room
DURABILITY: Bathroom Tile / Shower Tile
When selecting bathroom tile or shower tile it is important to make sure that you select tile that resists water. Most natural stone and porcelain tiles will do that. Many ceramic tiles, glass tiles, and metal tile will do that also, but not all of them do. It is always good to check a tile’s rating before ordering it, just to make sure.

Tile that looks like marble and natural stone.
Mixing marble with porcelain tile.
If you’re concerned that high-end, natural stone won’t fit into your budget, don’t worry. A rich, luxurious stone look can still be achieved by using other types of materials. We carry high quality porcelain tiles that are water-resistant and look like marble, travertine, and other types of natural stone, and would fool even the most discerning eye. Our porcelain tile that looks llke marble, and other types of natural stone, can cut the cost of materials dramatically. If this appeals to you, then we recommend splurging for a few real marble or real natural stone trim pieces to pull the look together. Check out our video – How to Mix Tile with Marble on how to achieve this.
Through body porcelain
A number of our manufacturers make a very high-grade porcelain tile that can be used by themselves to look like stone, or with their corresponding porcelain accents. These porcelain stone tiles can also be combined with real natural stone accents to create a very rich look. This, at a more affordable price than if all natural stone were used. If you’re looking for ceramic tile, porcelain tile, or other material that looks like marble, then visit us and check out our amazing look-alikes that will fool most anyone. Some may seek out the look-alikes because they cost less, while others simply prefer porcelain because it is extremely durable and much less fussy to clean. Porcelain tile design is also coveted for new design styles such as the latest concrete look, terra cotta look, and textile look. But, if you prefer real stone tile, and you have a budget for it, we have plenty of gorgeous, real, natural stone tile on display.
Designing a Shower
- Shower wall tiles can be as small or large tile as you like, as long as they are water-resistant.
- Shower floors, for many years, were more effective when smaller tiles are used. 1 inch or 2 inch tiles have worked particularly well in shower floor designs, as they allow the tile installer to create a more natural slope to the center drain without having to make cuts into larger sized tiles. Smaller tiles also create nice traction for your feet. Mosaics made of natural stone or porcelain have worked (and still do) especially well for shower floors, as do items like sheared river rock.
That said, the landscape of shower floor tile is changing. Enter the linear drain.
- Shower floors, when used in conjunction with linear or bar-style drains can now use a much larger tile than before. With a simple slope to one side, larger tiles can now be used to effectively move the water where it needs to go. The tile should still, in most cases be ‘unglazed’ and rated to withstand the constant water exposure, but you no longer need to look exclusively to mosaics for the shower floor. Check out our Houzz IdeaBook on these linear drains and how designers are using them in showers.
- Larger pieces of natural stone can be fabricated for the shower dam or threshold to help eliminate grout lines and help keep water inside the shower. Large pieces of natural stone are also nice for a bench or bench-top, and for lining a custom shower niche.
